California has been pretty progressive in how it treats domestic violence cases and how it directs the police and the courts to handle these cases. The goal of our laws is to prevent violence in familial or intimate relationships. Yet many women fall victim to domestic violence.
About 35 percent of women in the US have experienced rape, physical violence and /or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. American women murdered by male partners totaled 11,766 between 2001 and 2012. That is double the number of American troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq during the same period. It’s hard to believe the situation is so prevalent in our neighborhoods and communities.
In San Diego County alone, 17,000 domestic violence incidents are reported annually. But there is help. Call 911 or the 24 hour National Domestic Violence Hotline if you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence. The hotline can help victims find shelter and social services to aid them. Legal help is also available. Legal options include procuring a stay away order, a restraining order or emergency protective order.
