Why You Need to Save Cash Before a Divorce
Not every divorce gets messy, but you may be surprised at how vindictive some spouses can be when the other spouse asks for a divorce. Before you advise your spouse of your decision, you should make arrangements to protect yourself. This may mean making sure that you are physically safe, but it can also mean making sure that you are financially safe.
If you and your spouse share bank accounts and credit cards, then your spouse can easily call their bank and/or credit card provider and freeze you out of the account. With a few calls, your spouse can ensure that you have no access to your money or open lines of credit. This will make it very difficult for you to move out of the house, cover your personal expenses, and hire a divorce lawyer.
Before you file the divorce paperwork, we recommend that you open at least a checking account in your name alone and divert some of your income into it. You should also consider applying for a credit card just in your name in case larger expenses pop up during your divorce.
